The winners of this year’s Literacy Outreach and Garfield County Public Library System’s annual “I Love to Read” contest were announced Wednesday at the award presentation at Colorado Mountain College’s Glenwood Center. The winners read aloud their essays to families, friends, teachers and a principal or two.

More than 750 entries from Re-1, Re-2 (K-12) students and the general public were received addressing this year’s question, “How reading makes me a better citizen.”

A panel of community judges reviewed the entries and based their winning selections on sincerity, originality and on how well the question was answered.

Literacy Outreach is affiliated with Colorado Mountain College’s Developmental Education department. This nonprofit organization trains and organizes volunteers to tutor adult learners in Garfield County needing basic literacy skills in reading, writing, math, and oral communications.

The “I Love to Read” essay contest, the Glenwood Canyon Shuffle Run in October, and Spellebration in March are events promoting the efforts of Literacy Outreach. Their offices are located in the lower level of the Glenwood Springs Public Library at 413 Ninth Street. Director Martha Fredendall can be reached at 945-5282.
