It was a wonderful fly-in

The Glenwood Springs Municipal Airport hosted a fly-in on Saturday, Oct. 4. It was a great success. The new hangars were open to the public, and several out-of-town people came to see the new hangars and environmentally friendly resurfacing on the runway.

The new surface has won an environmental award for the city, and the award is on display at City Hall. There were balloons, airplane balsa wood giveaways, face painting and an ultralight display, so fun was had by all.

There was a drawing for several prizes, some of which were donated by the Hotel Denver (a night’s stay, pool pass and dinner), the new Tramway (four tickets) and the Brew Pub (dinner).

Many local pilots, including our airport manager, Dick Weinberg, donated some scenic flights. Even though the colors are mostly gone, it is still a very beautiful area over which to fly, and I am sure the flights will be enjoyed by all the winners.

Many thanks to all the efforts of the airport committee: Steve Carver, Jill Peterson, Dave Merritt, Rick (for the great breakfast) and Dick W. A big thanks to Wayne Rudd, who opened his hangar to display some well-restored classic airplanes.

I really began to appreciate the community involvement in the airport and the sense of support from the pilots. Thank you all for keeping the spirit of the airport alive and well.
