Letter: A letter from the editor
The editorial cartoon on Monday’s opinion page depicting a gun labeled “NRA” with smoke coming from the barrel making the shape of Florida would have been better not run.
While we seek to run topical cartoons, and while editorial cartoons are blunt instruments often intended to shock, the terrorist murders in Orlando were too raw and were politicized too rapidly for the cartoon to be good commentary.
That is not to say that we will stifle criticism of the NRA or that letters such as Patrick Hunter’s on this page or those expressing an opposite view that will run in coming days are inappropriate. Quite the contrary. But editorial cartoons lack nuance, and the first day after the attack was just too soon for this one.
