Letter: Cheney right for DA

I encourage every voter in the 9th Judicial District to vote for Jeff Cheney for district attorney. Jeff has the experience, passion for justice and relationships to serve our district with excellence. I have known Jeff and his family for many years, and as a mother, teacher and community volunteer, I absolutely believe that he is the right person for this job.

Jeff Cheney has spent 10 years of his legal career prosecuting in our district, including some of the most serious of cases of child molestation, rape and murder. Jeff’s managerial track record shows fiscal responsibility, effective use of resources, and leadership among colleagues and law enforcement personnel.

As a strong advocate for victims’ rights and justice for all of the residents of our district, Jeff Cheney will fulfill his duty to investigate and vigorously prosecute criminal cases, instead of working against law enforcement to fulfill a political agenda. Because Jeff is trusted by law enforcement and has a good rapport with them, he will be able to offer guidance throughout the investigative process from the issuance of warrants, to searches and seizures, to effective and accurate testimony at trial.

The current dismissal rate under Caloia is approaching upwards of 70 percent in the most recent quarter of 2016. Several victims of domestic violence have come forward this past year to voice complaints about unwarranted dismissal of cases against their batterers. Jeff will see that cases aren’t dismissed out of hand before thorough investigation has taken place.

In addition, Caloia’s diversion program is too lenient and favors the interests of perpetrators over the safety of our community and the rights of victims. When we are discussing the establishment of “safe zones” for women in Carbondale, it is time to take a critical look at the direction our DA’s office is taking.

We need a district attorney who is a real leader and will use his experience and balanced approach to promote justice for all citizens.
