Letter: Cheney’s citizen advisers

Jeff Cheney’s website presents a six-point plan for being district attorney. It includes “Citizens Advisory Board” and a “Citizens Victim Advisory Group.” These are supposedly selected citizens who will advise him about how to handle cases. As I’ve continually heard Jeff use this as a platform, I keep asking, why does a supposedly “experienced” attorney need citizens with perhaps limited knowledge of the law tell him how to do his job.
To my knowledge, the district attorney’s office currently has a full staff of victim-witness advocates who are trained and assigned to contact victims and keep them advised of their cases. If they are doing their job, there should be no need for an outside group of people to take over their function.

Who would these people be? Would their opinions overrule the trained attorneys in his office? Why does a supposedly “experienced” district attorney, outside of this assembled team of deputy DA’s, need citizen input advising him on how to do his job?

We elect a district attorney to make difficult choices and to be accountable to the people. Perhaps Jeff Cheney doesn’t have the wisdom, experience or confidence to do this job on his own.

I’m voting for Chip McCrory for DA, who clearly has the experience and is willing to be accountable for his decisions and not pass his responsibility to do his job to “citizens advisory” board for the implementation of the law.

I am not an lawyer, but is Jeff Cheney?
