Letter: Fight bullying
The suicide rates in the Roaring Fork Valley have become alarmingly high. In fact, the rate of suicide in our valley is almost three times as high as the national average.
Unfortunately, there are very few resources available for people with mental health issues here in Colorado. Six times as many people die by suicide in Colorado annually than from homicide, and suicide is significantly higher among children ages 10-14.
After researching this problem, I found a correlation between suicide and bullying. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, a student who is bullied at school is four times more likely to attempt suicide.
To combat this trend, Glenwood Springs High School and Carbondale Middle School recently implemented a program called NO BULLY, which is a research-based policy that encourages students to think through the consequences of their actions and find solutions to put an end to bullying. Through Advanced Solutions Training, teachers learn to facilitate change in students and ensure that they are more effective in their peer relations.
This program is completely sponsored by ESPN and can be brought to schools at no expense of their own. This program is available for schools throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. By implementing this program at your own school, you are making progress toward a safer and happier environment for students. If you value this plan and are interested in implementing it, contact your school administrators to inquire about NO BULLY.
