Letter: Go easy on Uber

Stacey Brown raises some worthwhile points in her criticism of Uber in the PI, July 17, but she weakens her argument by presenting a lopsided assessment of passenger security. It is certainly true that a Google search turns up instances of horrific behavior by some Uber drivers. But substituting “taxi driver” for “Uber driver” generates a lengthy list of frightening examples, including a former Denver taxi driver recently sentenced to a 30-year prison term for raping a woman on Christmas Eve.

Most of my tech-savvy business colleagues have long since gravitated to Uber and other ride-hailing services because they find both the convenience and the overall experience superior to taxis. I have been a bit slower to adopt, given my limited technical skills, but whenever I have used such services, I have been favorably impressed. And with regard to security, I believe the collective wisdom of thousands of Uber customers – expressed through driver ratings – offers a more effective means of policing driver behavior than traditional background checks.

I am sure Ms. Brown offers excellent service at her company and wish her well. But rather than focus on the negative I suggest she pay closer attention to the reasons for Uber’s large, loyal and growing customer base and incorporate some of their distinctive attributes in her own service.
