Letter: Great 4th of July column

Congratulations, Randy, on your wonderful July 4th column.

In my mind, you clearly captured our circumstance, complete with many of our blessings as well as our challenges. You have done an excellent job of describing our political atmosphere, with its accompanying distortions, fear baiting and lack of respect for those with whom we don’t agree.

You have inspired me to listen harder, read more (and not just from my own tribe). I hope others feel that inspiration as well. I have long felt that the solutions to our challenges lie somewhere in the middle, a middle that has become not only elusive, but scorned. We have a history of overcoming obstacles and finding solutions.

How we accomplish this in the current deadlocked state of affairs has yet to reveal itself, but I am trying to remain optimistic that, as Ronald Reagan joked, “there’s a pony in there somewhere.”

Thanks, again, and keep the good sense coming.
