Letter: Happy holidays
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of year, but each time I see the first sign in the grocery store encouraging customers to preorder their Thanksgiving turkey, I’m surprised. Where has the past year gone? As my wife, Jean, and I have welcomed sons-in-law and grandkids into our family, it seems like the years are getting shorter.
Every year on Thanksgiving we travel to my Aunt Rita’s house to spend time with family and enjoy a delicious meal. One of the downsides to going to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving dinner, though, is that we don’t get to stock our refrigerator with leftovers to enjoy over the next few days. Luckily, our family tradition is to eat a second Thanksgiving dinner on Friday night, so we can make turkey sandwiches throughout the next week.
I’m extremely fortunate that most years I get to spend two Thanksgivings with the people who are most important in my life, because in many parts of the world, there are brave Americans who will be separated from their loved ones on Thanksgiving or won’t be able to celebrate at all.
As families across the country gather together and set their Thanksgiving tables, some chairs may be empty. They are chairs for the many men and women across our state and country who have answered the call to serve. It is because of the courage and dedication of these individuals that we are able to gather around our tables and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in a free nation. When you are going around the table sharing what you are thankful for this year, I encourage you to add a special mention for all of our troops.
Jean and I have a lot to be thankful for: our two daughters, Liesl and Elizabeth, our sons-in-law, Chris and Jace, and our two wonderful grandkids. Our parents woke up every day and worked hard to provide a better life for the next generation, and today I have the honor of continuing that hard and necessary work. I continue to be thankful for the opportunity you have given me to represent the 3rd Congressional District of Colorado.
Jean and I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and a safe holiday season.
