Letter: Hatred solves nothing

For some Americans, voting this election is a bitter pill to swallow. It is important to remember the losing side still represents millions of our fellow Americans. In my 40 years of voting I, too, know how that feels, having been there more than once.

But promoting outright hate, casting blame, declaring an enemies list, lamenting the cultural/political shift that may be a wave more than a trend for the future is of no use.

Many will cast doubt no mater what the results. I want you to remember that leadership is not a trait of individuals. Leadership theorist James MacGregor Burns describes leadership as a collective process, a characteristic of the relationship between individuals rather than a property of individuals themselves. WWII Gen. George Patton once said, “We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people. Lead me, follow me or get out of the way.”

The important concepts presented here are lead and even more importantly together, for like it or not, we are moving forward, all I can ask is that you remember we are in this together. Visceral hatred toward those we disagree with will solve nothing, it may be a bitter pill but we have the true opportunity to move our country toward forward. Together of course.
