Letter: National Popular Vote provides insurance against voter fraud
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which now boasts Colorado as its newest member, amplifies the voice of every Coloradan in choosing a president. Today, we control only nine of 538 total electoral votes. But once states combining for 270 or more electoral votes pass the bill, Colorado voters will become part of a coalition with enough clout to elect a president who will be the winner of the popular vote across all 50 states and DC. As things now stand, we are roughly two-thirds of the way to 270.
Here’s another big advantage. A National Popular Vote provides insurance against the possibility of voter fraud swinging a presidential election to the wrong candidate. Today, a handful of fraudulent votes in a couple of close states could change enough electoral votes to swing a presidential election one way or another. Under a National Popular Vote, it would be virtually impossible to alter the hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions of votes it would take to change the total and fraudulently elect a president.
