Letter: Peace in our time

Wow! I am a not-at-all anonymous member of Alcoholics Anonymous and I think Doug Meyers just made amends to me. Mr. Meyers is the hombre who objected to my letter which teased Texans.

Now, he writes that he agrees with me — both major parties share responsibility for the political malaise in this country. Mr. Meyers indicates he would like to contact me so we can exchange ideas.

We both know we would disagree, but what’s wrong with that. Freedom is not the freedom to impose your opinions on someone else, but to express your opinion and listen, really listen, to what that someone has to say.

My father was an I Like Ike lawyer and I lived with him for 13 of the last 19 years of his life right here in Glenwood Springs. We had some hellacious arguments. He was the pro, but I held my own. When I was younger, those arguments usually ended bitterly. As I got older, they ended with more understanding.

Back and forths like that are usually handled better in social media rather than letters to the editor. Therefore, I authorize the PI to share my phone number and email address with Mr. Meyers. I look forward to hearing from you, Doug.
