Letter: Support Art Education
During May, all of the local schools celebrate the artistic mastery of our students. There are art shows, concerts and drama productions throughout the valley this month.
The art teachers of the valley support each other sharing ideas, projects and teaching techniques. RE-1 School district has put time into the school calendar allowing the art teachers to meet once a month. We have found this time valuable for honing our teaching skills. During these meetings, we also plan how to showcase our student work from the entire year.
Representing all the art teachers of the valley, I would like to encourage the community to voice your support by visiting the art shows. Let your principals and board members know how vital the arts are to the well-being of your child. A search through education journals will reveal articles written touting the importance of art education when success in the current workforce clearly requires and values creative problem solving. It makes common sense.
Our students also benefit from the arts offered through local community art centers. Please support these valuable assets even during times or revamping and growth. In Glenwood, the art center positively impacts our students through classes and offering a venue for a yearly show called The Battle of the Walls. Carbondale students experience the same through CCAH and the Launchpad. Our district extends to Basalt where the Art Base offers classes and the invaluable Claudette Carter Mentorship program.
This valley is rich in arts. Let’s work together to show our support for the sake of our children!
