Letter: Support for immigrants
In recent weeks, we at English In Action have heard from many of our adult students that they are worried about their future as immigrants in the Roaring Fork Valley. While our students are resilient, some have expressed concern, mainly for their children who are fearful and confused by things they have heard at school and in the media.
At English In Action, our purpose is twofold: to help adult immigrants learn and improve their English, and to provide friendship, understanding and compassion to our immigrant community members. Helping our valleywide neighbors gain the ability to communicate in English is perhaps one of the best things we can do to support them — a skill that will be even more essential in facing whatever challenges the future may bring.
We remind our students they are not alone. Many, many members of our community support them. We encourage our students to study, to learn, to not lose hope. We believe that one of the best things they can do for their kids is continue to model strength, courage and the pursuit of education.
We at English In Action believe our community is enriched by embracing our diversity and by coming together in celebration of our mutual humanity. When we sit in each other’s kitchens, eat each other’s food, share each other’s hopes and dreams, we cannot help but see the best in each other.
We are united in this belief.
