Letter: Support for Rick Davis
Has anyone failed to notice that we have leapt into a completely unprecedented political era? I ask because you would never guess it from the campaigns for local office, especially the at-large City Council race. It’s as though we are banking on somehow getting back to business as usual (before Nov. 8, 2016) and the assumptions that held sway back then.
I emailed each current City Council member asking for their thoughts on the issue of immigration, specifically, making sanctuary or safe-space provisions or other responses to mass deportation orders. We have a very large population of folks who would be affected, so I thought it would make sense to begin the conversations leading to a policy for our town. Only one member responded: Kathy Trauger, who said she didn’t think anyone here would likely be affected.
We face daunting challenges to our economy, our environment and our social structure, but you’d never know it from reading the letters supporting our at-large candidates. I am going to vote for Rick Davis, because he is a thoughtful person who stresses the importance of listening and discussing, of searching for consensus on difficult issues, of bringing the most often overlooked citizens to the table.
He has experience in Glenwood local government, but is capable of taking a broad and deep and long-term view, unlike the chamber-anointed folks who seem determined to ignore the new reality.
Start a dialogue, stay on topic and be civil.
