Letter: A troubling change in Glenwood

For generations, my family has enjoyed regular trips to Glenwood Springs. We love to swim in the Hot Springs Pool, hike, shop, eat out and enjoy whatever other activities are in season. We usually visit two times a year. On our last visit in late July, we noticed a disturbing change.

People were loitering around town, and panhandlers greeted us on each side of the pedestrian bridge. One evening, my daughters and I walked to a convenience store near our hotel to buy some snacks. We kept our distance as a man behaving irrationally came in off the street and harassed the clerk and another customer. As we were nearing to leave town at the end of our trip, we were approached in the gas station parking lot by a man begging for money.

Glenwood Springs is a favorite, and in the past we have found it to be a wonderful place. We will come again, and hope that this situation has been taken under control. However, we will not return if we do not feel safe, and will also warn our friends and neighbors of the new change. The town will also be less appealing for Amish and other visitors looking for a family-friendly atmosphere. Please make and keep Glenwood Springs the amazing place that it has always been.
