Letter: Apathy and ignorance
A prime example of apathy and ignorance was to be seen at an open forum held in Battlement Mesa last Saturday with Rep. Bob Rankin. Exactly five people were in attendance. Here was a chance for residents to confront an elected state official and speak their minds on a wide variety of issues. Political partisanship has put up a thick wall — no Democrats would consider hearing from a Republican and no Republicans would turn out to hear a representative from the other party. The majority just opt out.
You holler and complain about government, but when there is an opportunity to participate or confront any of your elected officials, you ignore that chance. Apathy is what will eventually have us enslaved.
What would our state representative have taken away from this puny gathering? Mostly commentary regarding support for the oil and gas industry. The biggest topic for Battlement Mesa should have been property values and the high costs of living here compared to Grand Junction. Most retirees have lost everything they spent their lives working for. Health concerns should also have been addressed as well as an autocratic HOA.
Due to a prior commitment I was unable to attend, but I did seek to find out what transpired. At this time I plan to withdraw membership from my lifelong party of choice and become an independent. The people of the U.S.A. are allowing themselves to be bulldozed over by the powerful and wealthy elite.
