Letter: Bridge and all costs are the state’s

Debate continues on how to pay for the new bridge. I should like to point out a few details that have not been mentioned.

Before World War II, the bridge at this site always was referred to as the “State Bridge,” as it was built and maintained by the state on a state route. The present bridge was built in the late 1940s after the previous cast iron one broke when being moved. This state bridge was built by the state on State Highway 82 with state money. The state maintains and controls it and the state route through town. The town even has to ask the state for permission to put up a sign along this state route through town.

Why should not the state pay all the costs of repairing or replacing this bridge?
