Letter: Commissioners are right about air regs

It is so unfortunate that once again well-meaning, albeit sanctimonious, environmental activists are trying to dominate the public policy discussion in our community and speak for all of us. This time it is centered around new air quality rules that the state of Colorado is considering.

Recently, it was reported in this paper that the Grand Valley Citizens Alliance is calling out our elected officials for their support of more localized air quality rules, instead of a one-size-fits all approach that the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission is pursuing. Our commissioners are right: Air quality on the Western Slope is far better than the Front Range, and regulations governing us should reflect that. The Front Range faces many extra air pollution challenges such as higher population density and increased traffic, which actually put more greenhouse gases in the air than oil and gas development.

Our county commissioners are actually breaking new ground by funding the studies that the GVCA references. It’s my understanding that no other local government in the country has paid for such a study, and that demonstrates a real commitment to protecting our air. Because at the end of the day, we all want our fresh mountain air to stay that way.

It is a truly frightening thought to think of children or grandchildren living in a world where their air is unsafe to breath. But I much prefer the commissioners’ common-sense approach, which ensures our air is clean without swallowing Front Range rules.
