LETTER: Commissioners should be focused on the health and well-being of citizens

Every well pad and every drill site along with the tank farms and all the processing of gas in Garfield County should be viewed as a toxic, hazardous, carcinogenic and potentially lethal chemical site. We urge the Garfield County commissioners to withdraw their position with the Air Quality Control Commission that our Garfield County should be treated differently from other parts of Colorado. Just because the average ambient air pollution level of Garfield County is below federal standards should not mean that individual wells should be allowed to pollute more.

The Garfield County commissioners should not be concerned with the potential added cost related to gas production but should be 100 percent focused on the health and well-being of its citizens including those men and women working in these hazardous environments. These gas companies have some of the best engineers in the world and I am confident that they could meet any new air quality requirements and could invent or purchase remote monitoring equipment that would allow them to measure and prevent leakage of small particulate matter, methane, ozone precursors, ozone, carcinogens and hydrogen sulfide.
