LETTER: Do not leave your dog in the car on summer days
I visited the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool on Sunday and observed a small dog left in a car with the windows cracked a couple of inches. The dog was barking incessantly. The car started in the shade but after a couple hours was in the full sun.
After several complaints, the pool manager was contacted and hopefully the police were called. I wish I had made the call myself. As a dog lover and owner, I know my small dog would have succumbed to the heat (that is why I do not take her with me in the summer).
Please be reminded that on a 78 degree day, a car parked in the shade equals 90 degrees and a car parked in the sun equals 160 degrees in minutes. Because dogs do not sweat (except to a minor degree through their foot pads) they do not tolerate high temps as well as humans. Please do not leave your dog in the car!
