LETTER: Don’t be judgmental on immigration issue
In this country we struggle with the fact that there are a large number of people living here who have entered our country illegally. Some call them illegal immigrants while others label them undocumented.
Immigration reform is clearly going nowhere in the Congress anytime soon, so we need to come to grips with this issue on a local level. Without passing judgment I would like to point out a few facts.
Anyone who is not a descendant of the native peoples of this continent is someone whose ancestors came here without permission from the original local inhabitants. We took possession of this area from the Utes against their will. Portions of Colorado, possibly including our area, were part of Mexico until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which resulted from the Mexican-American War and was forced on the government of Mexico as a result of their military defeat.
While I am not proposing any solutions to this issue I am simply suggesting that we should not be judgmental and that we consider the history when we form our opinions.
“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.”
