Letter: Downtown is the soul of the community

Is everyone aware that malls are basically big boxes and franchises? That being the case, the downtown is really the local soul of the community. True everywhere … even Glenwood Springs.

Notice that pedestrian traffic is part and parcel of malls. It is the local businesses that have the greatest stake in the community because they’ve inherited the old downtown traffic concept.

In addition, Glenwood has always been split between the north and south. The present bridge plan underscores this by routing traffic around the Glenwood Hot Springs and dropping it onto Grand Avenue. Traffic could be removed from the heart of town, which would really connect shoppers with merchants … and each other. For this to happen, either the present bridge plan should be extended up the grade to 10th Street, or the highway should be routed up the east side of the Roaring Fork as far as practical.

“Pedestrianize Downtown” is a rally cry that gets to the heart of the matter. If the consciousness of Glenwood is raised to this level, a solution will follow, despite the push back, which is obvious and intentional exaggeration, in other words, hyperbole.

For individuals who want a “Pedestrianize Downtown” bumper sticker, please write me in Grand Junction.
