Letter: Editorial cartoon in July 10 edition of the Free Press unpatriotic

Editor’s Note: The editorial cartoon that ran on page 7 of the Free Press on July 10, 2015 depicted several terrorists holding the American flag with a lit match. Uncle Sam is depicted as offering to trade the Confederate battle flag for the American flag. The editorial board at the Free Press thought that this was an interesting opinion on the current debate over the use of the Confederate battle flag in the wake of the shooting in South Carolina.

I found the cartoon on page 7 of the July 10th issue of the Free Press quite shocking. The cartoonist depicts the supporters of the American flag as a group of thugs and terrorists. The man holding the Confederate Flag is the perfect Southern gentleman complete with Uncle Sam costume.

I know a great many people who support the American Flag and the Union for which it stands. None of them is a terrorist. Disgusting! That cartoon was in very poor taste, even unpatriotic!
