Letter: FedEx facility would disrupt safety and peace

If you’ve taken a drive down south Midland Avenue recently, chances are you’ve run into some traffic. Twenty-seventh Street bridge repairs, pedestrian bridge and shoulder work over the last month at the corner of Sopris and Midland and of course school starting.

Let’s face it, Midland Avenue is an extremely busy road for our community. This road might get a lot busier as a result of a recent decision by our county commissioners to allow FedEx to construct a facility at the end of the road. This facility will result in 230 additional vehicle trips per day. A little quick math (assuming most of those trucks run between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.)… that’s roughly one truck every two and half minutes! Why would we want to add this level of traffic to an already busy road? These 230 trucks every day will run right through one of the largest residential areas in Glenwood, right past Mountain Valley Developmental Services and right past Sopris Elementary School. It seems a bit unnecessary to subject our community to such traffic and further congest a road with no viable outlet (save for Dry Park road)?

It’s disappointing that our commissioners Martin and Sampson put big business ahead of the safety and well-being of our community. This is just not the location (with current infrastructure) for a project like this. John Martin commented in the recent Post Independent article, “It’s the price of being successful.” If we have to sacrifice community safety and peace to be “successful” then I’ll pass.
