Letter: Felony DUI bill will make us less safe

America — the land of the incarcerated, not the free.

We lead the world in prisoners.

To increase jail population, make the state less safe, destroy lives without purpose and increase taxes to exacerbate the problem, vote for the felony DUI bill.

Getting tough on crime does not work, because being too lenient is not the cause of the problem.

Voluminous studies prove you can’t punish your way to a safer society.

Legislators know nearly nothing about sentencing.

Mandatory sentences proclaim the Legislature knows what the sentence should be based on category of crime.

The people involved with the specific offense know immensely more.

I’m vehement because I studied the issue. This bill will make us less safe, and destroy lives at high human and financial cost.

Legislators supporting this bill failed to do their homework and will hurt us all.
