LETTER: Four Mile Road should be withdrawn as an oil and gas haul route

It is our understanding that our commissioners are the only officials authorized to close Four Mile Road to oil and gas traffic. While we understand and accept the current use, which allows timber to be hauled on Four Mile Road, we cannot countenance the enormous impact that oil and gas hauling would bring to our area.

We find it disturbing that so many of our tax dollars are being spent on unnecessary “upgrades” to Four Mile Road and other infrastructure and that these “upgrades” appear to be designed for the sole purpose of facilitating oil and gas traffic. Only a formal resolution on the part of the commissioners to prohibit oil and gas hauling on Four Mile Road will allay these concerns.

Our backyard includes vital watersheds, deer, elk, bear and a new moose population, sacred Ute lands, hunting, fishing, cattle grazing, outfitting and endless recreational opportunities — all of which face destruction by oil and gas development. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. If we don’t protect our backyard by prohibiting hauling related to the oil and gas industry on Four Mile Road, who will?

Awaiting a formal resolution from our Garfield County commissioners prohibiting Four Mile Road from being used for hauling related to oil and gas development …
