Letter: Free-market fable regarding energy problems

Letter writer Peter Westcott (FP 3/27/15) encourages Scott Tipton and Republicans “to make a bold move to reduce carbon emissions: sponsoring a carbon fee and dividend bill.” The best part of it, per Westcott, “is that it uses the free-market approach rather than relying on government regulations.”

By linking these two concepts, Westcott produces a self-defeating and logically impossible argument disclosing an astoundingly naive (or purposely deceptive) assertion, specifically that individual freedoms (free markets) are derived from governmental coercion (legislation).
