Letter: Freedom from Kellogg

To Mr. Kellogg, regarding his column on American liberty, faith and family. American liberty is defined by my freedom from your prescription of “faith” and your definition of “traditional family values.” Christianity in its many forms may be the “faith” of a majority, but it is not the foundation of American liberty, nor is any particular group’s narrow idea of marriage and family. Indeed, it’s the opposite. America is founded on the idea of freedom from such attempts to control other peoples lives, thoughts and beliefs, not modern conservative Christian values and selective readings and interpretations of a 2,000-year-old book written by men. You may not believe it, but we all have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, even if you don’t agree with it.

It is also important to note that poverty, discrimination and lack of economic or educational opportunity have far more to do with “underperformance in America today” than any imagined breakdown of family values. Homosexual couples can and do instill strong social values in their children, and do a better job than many traditional marriages that end in destructive divorce (a new “family value”).

There is also a reason justices are not elected and government has some authority here. It’s so people like you who think they know the “truth of history” (something always open to interpretation) can’t take complete “control of the lives of citizens.” I’d much rather have government and judges making decisions based on the real ideals of liberty than trust narrow conservative Christian ideals working a tyranny of faith on the rest of us.
