Letter: Grateful for rural fire district EMS staff

There are many people who are responsible for the fact that my wife, Ruth, survived her accident and I am extremely grateful to all of them. Doctor David Miller, his team and the staff at Valley View Hospital did an incredible job, but that would have not been possible without the prompt and professional response from the Glenwood and rural fire district EMS staff.

Like most of us, I don’t like to see property tax increases but I truly believe that the ones on this year’s ballots may be a matter of life and death for some. The decrease in revenues, as a result of the downturn in real estate values, has created a situation that will cause a reduction in services unless there are new funds available. It is important to understand that these ballot issues are not about physical facilities but about operations, primarily for needed staffing, and it sunsets in five years.

It should also be noted that any reduction in services might result in a change in the ISO insurance ratings that could cost more in increased fire insurance premiums than the amount of the tax increase. This is obviously a personal issue for me but I would support this imitative in any case. It is extremely important for our community that we maintain a high level of service in this area.
