Letter: Grateful for Water Plan

Annie Henderson, Upper Colorado Private Boaters Association
Carbondale

As a Colorado native who’s spent a long time living on both sides of the divide, I can appreciate the diversity of needs and views we have across this state when it comes to water. With a robust agricultural community, growing population and booming outdoor recreation economy, it’s easy to see how Colorado’s rivers are some of the hardest working ones in America.

Our water resources are finite, as we are all reminded with the recent release of Colorado’s Water Plan. The process of writing this plan was based in bringing diverse voices to the table, and figuring out how to make all of these interests work — it was time to balance Colorado’s water budget.

The way I see it, conservation is the best way to balance all of our needs. It leaves more water in the bank for growing communities, doesn’t place additional pressure on agriculture, and keeps water in our streams and rivers to support recreation like boating and fishing. It’s a way of meeting demands that doesn’t damage other interests, unlike agricultural buy-and-dry or large, costly diversion projects.

I am very pleased to see the inclusion of a conservation goal in Colorado’s Water Plan, and eagerly await the implementation of this much-needed benchmark for using water more wisely.
