Letter: Humans can be horrible stewards of the environment

It never ceases to amaze me what horrible stewards of this planet humans can be: from sucking it dry of every natural resource it has to destroying animals’ natural habitat as well as our own.

And maybe some of you have seen the email that has been circulating lately of a beautiful mountain lion that was killed, supposedly, on the Boy Scout Trail. From what I am told, it’s one of the largest lions ever seen in this area, which is now gone forever, because of human ignorance.

[Wildlife officers] did say that this is a photo from a few years ago that keeps getting sent out. I asked what the rules are for hunting lions and was disgusted to find out that dogs can be used to chase a lion up a tree and then the hunter can shoot the lion out of the tree. WOW … that must take a real skilled marksman to stand at the base of a tree and shoot an animal sitting there scared to death. You are not allowed to shoot a wild turkey out of the roost (sitting in a tree), but a lion is OK. It is disgraceful that this is a legal way to kill these magnificent creatures, which should not be allowed to be killed at all, let alone this way.

Humans, for some ridiculous reason, think they can do whatever they want on this planet, even if it is killing just for fun. If hunters were out there with nothing more than what they came into this world with, I don’t think they would be at the top of the food chain.
