Letter: Lawmakers’ plans are discriminatory

Could someone teach me the true meaning of discrimination? Tuesday’s article regarding the state’s lawmakers’ plans — specifically the statement that “Democrats also want to look at helping minority-owned businesses receive state contracts” — sounds like discrimination to me.

Imagine the uproar if the statement was rather “Democrats also want to look at helping white-owned businesses …” They wouldn’t dare! At least they wouldn’t in 2014. Yet the “flip side” of this statement is OK to say … for some weird reason.

A much more educated statement would be “Democrats also want to look at hiring the highest quality businesses at the most affordable price” — and blow off the skin color garbage.

In about 20 years, I believe “white people” will be outnumbered by “minorities.” So maybe in 2034, we might see the flip side of this lopsided thinking. And even then — it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the state of Colorado.

May the best, affordable business win, that’s what I believe.
