LETTER: Loss of oil shale operations will be devastating

The news of Shell moving its oil shale operations out of Colorado is devastating for our region and our state. This industry was deliberately targeted by the federal government, which once again put its own narrow, short-sighted political agenda ahead of working families.

Make no mistake about it: This was not a decision made on free-market economic factors, or because oil shale is “unfeasible” as the extremists, who seem to be calling the shots at our expense, would like you to believe. If it was about that, the company would be abandoning its oil shale activities altogether, not simply moving them to other countries like Jordan and Canada.

Is it any wonder that our economy can only manage snail’s-pace growth, and our unemployment rate remains tragically high, when the government drives our industries overseas? The restrictions that the BLM put on oil shale development with their last EIS — written by the extremist groups’ Washington, D.C., lawyers — were calculated to ensure this would happen. There is simply no way that Shell, or any company, could conduct the research and development required to finalize their oil shale recovery procedures, let alone have it go commercial, with the few scraps of land Salazar left them. If the BLM and the Sierra Club had been in charge of communications technology, we would still be writing on stone tablets.

It is appalling that a backwater country like Jordan, of all places, possesses greater foresight than the United States when it comes to technological innovation and economic development.
