Letter: Make Election Day a national holiday

I propose national legislation that we trade Columbus Day for a National Election Day. Election Day should be a national holiday. Our national elections are about our right to vote in this country. It means much more than Columbus Day, which has lost a large amount of credibility historically.

Even though this new holiday would be every other year, it is totally worth the trade. The American working people deserve this freedom to exercise their right to vote without obstruction or discrimination. It might help re-energize patriotism in a more positive manner. We need this national holiday to openly discuss our government and vote on candidates as well as important issues on the ballot.

It would be even better if campaign advertising would be restricted to this one day. This might be the path to overturning Citizens United.
