LETTER: McElwee for Carbondale Fire board

I would like to submit my thoughts to the Carbondale Fire District voting public regarding Gary McElwee and his stand on the issues before the board at this time.

Gary has served actively as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for 10 years. He has been very proud to be recognized as a member of such an elite group of public servants and first responders.

Toward the end of 2013, after the mill levy was voted down, Gary became more interested in what was happening with the finances and operations of the Fire District’s budget. He began questioning many decisions being made by the current board.  He soon came to the conclusion that more could and should be done to balance the budget without asking for large tax increases of the public they serve. He believes that reduction in critical emergency staffing should be the last area to be considered for cuts.

Gary feels it’s time for a change in leadership and direction, and he would very much like to be a part of making that change take place.

Gary has extensive background in management and balancing multimillion dollar budgets for large corporations. He feels strongly that he can facilitate bringing the Fire District budget more in line with the constraints of today’s economy without scare tactics and threats.

If you have not voted yet, I urge you to vote for Gary McElwee and a positive change to the Carbondale Fire District board of directors.

Thank you for your time,

Barbara McElwee
