Letter: Memorial to fallen veterans

John B. Scalzo
Rifle

The Rifle American Legion Kelly-Hansen Post No. 78 is dedicating a new memorial stone on May 3 at 2 p.m. located on 30th Street, just as you enter on the north side of the Wamsely School. The dedication is, “In honor and remembrance of the Garfield County veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country’s freedom we all so remember and honor all those who served their country faithfully.”

We have 91 names that have been confirmed from Garfield County at the time of their enlistment, and 74 of them confirmed as per residence, also as per war and loss of their life. There are 26 for Rifle, 26 from Glenwood Springs, eight from New Castle, seven from Silt, four from Carbondale and three from Parachute. The last 17 of them where non-confirmed as per home residence. Some of these could have been from the CCC camps. The County Draft Board was in Glenwood Springs, but not a home address. None was given. That was our big problem in finding them.
