Letter: Paternalistic absurdity

The letters to this paper regarding the commissioners’ decision to deny any county funds to Planned Parenthood, so far, have been nearly unanimous in their condemnation. As was pointed out, this is not giving respect to women’s intelligence to judge the needs of their bodies and lives. It is a smug, paternalistic absurdity to decide to defund a well-established and trusted source of women’s health care.

Women need to remember this decision in the next election and vote these imperious men out of office.

The commissioners hide behind the skirts of state pre-emptive law to ignore the health of communities threatened by the heavily industrial processes of oil and gas. They have no such excuse with the Planned Parenthood vote; just a parsimonious disregard for half of their constituents’ health needs and care access.

When women vote thoughtfully, representatives who respect women are elected.
