Letter: Praise to the unions
As the Labor Day arrives this year, let us remember that without organized labor in our country all of you would have been up a creek long ago.
American workers’ rights and benefits have made life much nicer and more rewarding for office workers and professionals.
If labor unions disappear in the land and if labor laws are nullified, your workplace safety will go out the door.
Be grateful to the labor unions operating in the Roaring Fork Valley and elsewhere.
They include unions at the U.S. Postal Service, the telephone company, United Parcel Service, Roaring Fork Transportation Authority and Aspen School District.
Then there are the Aspen Professional Ski Patrol Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Whatever unions not mentioned, I suggest you all stand up and give a shout out to the American people in Pitkin County and Garfield County through the local newspapers. Be union proud.
Never forget that for many decades before more modern times, America’s middle class was mostly union members and blue-collar workers.
During September 2015 I encourage readers to bone up on American labor history. It’ll do y’all some great good in the coming years.
