Letter: Propagandist website

I am writing in regards to a letter you published recently calling the scientists and lay people who believe in the validity of climate change, “minions … of the Obama White House.” The author references a website that published a petition citing 17,000 “scientists” who reject the concept of global warming. The website in question, Environmental Perspectives Incorporated (EPI), is a radical propagandist organization created to “sound a warning to America and the Christian Church of serious threats to our freedom.”

The claims made by EPI are unwarranted and outlandish. It is a fact: there exists broad scientific consensus that humans are accelerating the pace of climate change with potentially catastrophic consequences. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, created in 1998 by the World Meteorological Organization & the UN Environmental Programme to assess climate science and inform policy action has found that, “Human activities … are modifying the concentration of atmospheric constituents … that absorb or scatter radiant energy. … [M]ost of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations.”

Thousands of other accredited, peer-reviewed studies have found similarly. Many details remain unknown. However, future generations will blame us if they discover we knew the gravity of the climate situation and chose not to act.
