Letter: Raise the severance taxes on mineral and petroleum resources

Raise the severance taxes on mineral and petroleum resources

I was pleased to read the article in your paper on Patagonia Clothing Company and its CEO Casey Sheahan’s opposition to fracking. The company and Mr. Sheahan have ideals that are as strong and durable as the clothing they sell.

State Sens. Steve King and Randy Baumgardner as well as state Reps. Bob Rankin, Ray Scott and Jared Wright would better serve the citizens of Colorado by raising the severance taxes on mineral and petroleum resources extracted from our state, and invest the funds in the education of our youth and people. The result would be a long term benefit rather than the short term benefits of jobs, and the accompanying boom and bust cycle.
