Letter: Rifle out from under the monopoly

I lived in Rifle, one of my favorite places on Earth, for about 12 years, and when I moved, I definitely missed it. But there was one thing I didn’t miss: the exorbitant gas prices. So I was really happy to read in the Glenwood Post about City Market’s selling gas in Rifle and finally breaking the monopoly-like grip under which Rifle and the surrounding area has suffered for so many years. I was glad to read about the immediate effect the competition has already had: a significant drop in gas prices. City Market, who donates to just about every nonprofit group in the area, now is contributing to all of the folks who have to drive to work to survive, to make a living. I read a list of “complicated factors” mentioned in the article as justification for high gas prices in the area. One factor was conspicuously absent: filthy, rotten greed. So, hooray for Rifle. And to the powers that be who aren’t thrilled to have healthy competition, sour grapes are hard to swallow.
