Letter: Salute to New Castle Fourth

I certainly agree with many of Sean Berry’s comments about the region’s celebration of the Fourth of July, and what it stands for. Next year I would recommend folks come to New Castle.

Thanks to Russell Talbott, his dad, Ross, Mr. T’s Hardware and Talbott Enterprises, and probably 50 to 100 volunteers, New Castle has been putting on one of the best small-town America’s celebrations held anywhere for the past 39 years.

It all starts as it should, with a flag ceremony put on by the local Cub Scouts, followed by a short statement and prayer regarding our country and all those who have served. This is all followed by a festival of fun and games that goes on for five hours. Kids riding an old-school fire truck with its siren singing out, a monster slip and slide, dunk and jousting tanks, water squirting 30 feet into the air that the kids are running through, kid contests of eating watermelons hanging on a string and banana splits without using their hands, huge bouncy rides from Bananas, probably over 25 games that the kids can get tickets to, win prizes, etc. etc.

This is all followed by a live band and fireworks that go until 10:30. It is truly the best of the best. It’s a don’t-miss event for many, and I hope to see you all next year.
