Letter: Secondary uses should be present at School District 51 solar garden

I saw your headline “Solar Gardens,” and thought “What a great idea.” Then I saw the photo, read the article and reconsidered my original impression. The idea of a solar garden (on 10.5 acres of land on 29 Road and D 1/4) is great, but there is no gardening planned as far as I can tell from the article. If anything ends up growing in this solar garden, it will probably be weeds. Gardening or other secondary uses could take place there if they elevate the solar collectors. They could use the snow and rain run-off to supplement irrigation and rent out the area under the collectors to grow shade-friendly crops. The shaded area could also be used as a venue for an on-premises farmers’ market. As far as being the first that isn’t the truth. The V.A. Hospital is in the process of completing a large solar array over their parking lots. Unlike the District 51 project, it is innovative in adding value and function to existing places. The V.A. solar array will not only provides energy, but it also provides weather-protected parking at their facility. District 51 has several existing parking lots and I’m sure that District 51 employees (and high school students) would find covered parking areas to be a perk that would make them very happy with directors of District 51.
