Letter: Sound Garden silenced

If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to listen, did it ever really happen? So runs my logic when I discovered that the Sound Garden at the Community Center had been unceremoniously decommissioned to make way for new ice rink lockers. While I understand the need I am at a loss to comprehend the method.

For those of you who don’t know the history behind the Sound Garden, it was constructed as a place of quiet and peace for the community. It was lovingly built and maintained by the Rippy family in memory of their son, Stuart. The garden, with its amazing plants and the sound gong, was truly a respite from the craziness of everyday life. It was a delightful place to just be.

Monday morning, I was at the Community Center walking my dogs when I discovered that the Sound Garden had been silenced and the bulldozers were well on their way to erasing any vestige of what had taken years to fully nurture and develop. There was no ceremony decommissioning the space. There was nothing in the paper announcing its demise. It was simply gone.

I want to thank the Rippys for their hard work and vision. I also want to honor the memory of Stuart. I am still listening…
