Letter: Students take on water demand

As population rises, water demand is also rising not only for agriculture and industry but also for personal use. With the increase in water use it is predicted that by 2020 water demand will exceed supply if something is not done to better conserve it.

That is why we, a group of students at Glenwood Springs High School, have constructed the F.L.O.W. (For the Love Of Water) policy. This is a plan that would be undertaken at the state government level. We have constructed this policy to reform the state’s water conservation plans and help our state for the future.

The plan would have two parts, education and legislation. Education in water conservation would be taught beginning in elementary school and all the way through high school. The second part would be legislation requiring low flow appliances, such as lavatories, and other appliances be installed in new construction and providing incentives for retrofitting older homes and businesses along with other water-saving measures. Our goal is to use no more water in 2060 than we do now.

There are many groups and businesses in Colorado that support water conservation at both the state and local level and that have water awareness programs. We need to try harder because we are only hurting ourselves and our future.
