Letter: Support Citizen’s Climate Lobby group

I am writing this letter supporting the Citizen’s Climate Lobby group, who, in addition to things people can and must do as fossil fuel consumers to reduce their carbon footprint, have a viable plan to create “the political will for a sustainable climate.” The climate change problem in which we find ourselves in the middle of will require government-scale action if we are to give our children a fighting chance for a future.

Briefly, the CCL proposition is to levy a revenue-neutral fee and dividend system on the fabulously wealthy fossil fuel extractors. A fee would be levied on carbon fuels coming out of the ground, be it gas or oil, in accordance with its carbon dioxide content when burned, and include carbon used in the extraction process, too. The revenue collected would be distributed equally back to all American families. Fuel prices would probably go up because extractors would pass this along to consumers, but to maintain their fantastic profits they know that the price cannot be too high or it will curb use. Some curtailment of use would be desirable as our current wanton ways are unsustainable. Fossil fuel subsidies also would be eliminated.

The example used is a 15$/ton carbon fee would equal 15 cents per gallon. But remember this money is distributed back to all citizens equally. Higher users would pay more in accordance with consumption. Ideas similar to this have been introduced by Rep. Larson, D-Conn., and rep Inglis, R-S.C., so there is some (scant) political will — that is what must be created by lobbying our congresspeople relentlessly for action. Please investigate the details at http://www.citizensclimatelobby.org and look for FAQ by Todd J. Smith. This group is far-reaching and gaining in momentum. Meetings are held the first Saturday of the month at the Third Street Center in Carbondale.

Climate change represents a problem almost unfathomable in consequence. We all can gain a handle on this seemingly out of control escalation of planetary degradation, if we employ a war-like effort on many fronts. This is one of them. What could be more important?
