Letter: Support Jacque for mayor
I’ve been working on the Basalt riverfront public space for over 18 months, and have seen roadblocks at every stage by the board members who do not represent what the people have consistently said they want.
With Jacque as one of just two, sometimes three council votes protecting the interests of the people, the process has been stopped by the refusal of the other council members to listen to what the vast majority of the people have had to say. Anyone can look at the public feedback, it’s on the town website. Consistently 80 percent of the comments and letters over the years have said less development, more public open and event space on the old Pan and Fork parcel.
But this election is not just about the riverfront space. Jacque voted no on the outrageous sales tax sharing that Mariner-Willits asked for to subsidize their additional development. This would have placed Old Town Basalt at an even greater competitive disadvantage. Mayor Whitsitt voted to protect your tax dollars, and avoid setting a dangerous precedent for other local municipalities to let developers take their badly needed tax revenue.
Whether you personally love her or not, you know Jacque has worked her behind off for you, and has actually listened. She has modified her positions based on feedback from the majority of her constituents, and I appreciate that. She’s there at Saxy’s every other Wednesday to listen to you. She’s at all the meetings, all the events, all the openings. The town is her first priority, keep her as mayor.
Kate Schwoerer and Jenn Riffle are like-minded. With them added to the board, we can move forward progressively and implement the dynamic vision of a legacy riverfront public space and vibrant town that so many have worked so hard for.
