Letter: Taking back America

I want to thank Patrick Hunter for his recent letter to the editor (“Disease of very big money”; July 11) educating the public on ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and the dominating choke hold it has had many legislatures around the country, including Colorado.

Have you ever noticed when you have a much-needed idea for a bill that would solve an issue or a problem in the state, it is so difficult to get the attention or support for it from state legislators? That’s because ALEC and hundreds of other lobbyists hovering at the state Capitol will screen it and knock it down. Our state legislators are overwhelmed with lobbyists. One person’s idea, no matter how meritorious it is, has little or no chance of making it through ALEC and a network of lobbyists.

In addition, after the Democrats and Republicans prioritize their party’s bills, there is no room for anything else. It is getting harder to see a democratic process at almost any level of government these days.

The same is true at the national level. The grievances against our federal government continue to grow. The U.S. Supreme Court endorsing Citizens United is just a start. Basically, Citizens United allowed super PACs and corporate America to buy congressional and presidential candidates.

The grievance list goes on and on including Americans being overtaxed, underpaid, abused voting rights, being spied on and much more. This list now almost matches the one made by the American colonists in 1775. Our democratic republic and the democratic process is disappearing. We need to fight to get it back. This is why I wrote this book: “If I Were President/Saving Main Street America.”
