Letter: Taking climate action

Joan Conway
Denver

I applaud Rocky Mountain Institute for its new net-zero energy building (being constructed in Basalt). As a Colorado resident, I am so happy to see these things taking place throughout the state. I loved the quote in the article from senior consultant, Michael Kinsley, when he said that the method of construction should not be used just because it is “green” but because it “makes sense.”

This quote struck me because it relates to every environmental issue. It makes sense for us to take action on issues surrounding global warming because we need to save our planet. Global warming has many devastating impacts: ice melting, sea levels rising and more extreme weather are just a few of these impacts. As citizens, it is not only important for us to take action ourselves, but it is also important to encourage businesses and community leaders to take action as well.

One way we can do this is by encouraging our senators to support the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The plan will cut carbon emissions from power plants 30 percent by 2030. Big polluters are encouraging Congress to destroy the bill so it is important they hear from their constituents. A simple way to do this is by calling Sens. Bennet and Gardner to voice support: Sen. Michael Bennet is 303-455-7600 and the office number for Corey Gardner is 970-663-2679.
